Long live the 90s!!!

The 90s … these admirable years that we all love and at some point go back to. This decade that the fashion industry welcomes back over and over and over again. There is something magical about the 90s… To me (and a lot of people my age) this is our childhood - filled with happy memories of freedom and carelessness, walking around with a Walkman and tamagochi, riding bikes, skates or roller blades. Computers were as slow as they could, but we never complained about it. Pop music was born and MTV was huge (so were well-choreographed video clips), along with them alternative rock and grunge gathered speed and hip-hop was becoming mass culture. Sitcoms were as great as they could be, there were family classics like Full house and Step by step, but the real deal was Friends. Movies in all genres were totally great and some of them brought amazing fashion ideas (most notably the age-defining Clueless). And the end of the decade was about to bring us the biggest TV fashionista ever known - Carrie Bradshaw. Street fashion was triving. Haute couture was proudly demonstrated by the supermodels of the 90s. And in between the music, movies, rising pop culture and the evolution of electronics a unique fashion generation was born.

A few months ago I had a themed Christmas party at work. The theme, of course, was the 90s. What a memorable walk through my childhood! So I started looking for ideas online and all of a sudden there was a sea of potential opportunities. Ever since I’ve been inspired to write this article. So let me walk you down the memory lane into this glorious era, counting down the 20 most memorable (for me) 90s trends and a few honorable mensions.

1.       The Overall
Every once in a while jumpsuits come back on the runway. The classic denim overall, however, is a pure 90s trend. It has straps, pockets everywhere and screams street fashion. Comfy, fits perfectly for all body types and can be combined easily with everything. The overall is a friend for life! (Often worn with number 18.)

2.       Chokers
As I have mentioned before, this is my favorite 90s trend. Chokers are definately here to stay and they come in various materials and patterns. The classic 90s choker, however, is a very cool netted one and is usually combined with at least 1 (or preferably 2) other necklaces.

3.       Bucket Hats
These were huge. Especially the denim bucket hat - it was the ultimate accessory of the decade. I remember wanting one so badly that when I finally had it I kept wearing it everywhere. Worn by everyone, at all ages, they are another great example of 90s street fashion and the rising  hip-hop culture. (Can be easily combined with number 11, 13 or 14.)

4.       Denim Skirts/ Shorts
Worn on the streets, at the beach, in the park – denim surely was everywhere. From Cindy Crawford in advertisements to the girl next door walking her dog, the shorts and skirts ruled the fashion world. They come with buttons, pockets, even applications and fit well with a lot of other trends. One of my personal favorites even today. (Fit especially well with numbers 8, 9, 12 and 19.)

5.       Fanny Packs
I’m not judging this particular item (at least not in this article) but these were the bags of the decade. Fit well with other street fashion items and apparently were comfortable for everyone – including a lot of sellers on my local market, who kept their money there - who needs a cash register when you have a fanny pack!

6.       Slip Dresses
These are making a strong comeback. Largely favored red carpet item, widely worn by the supermodels of the 90s. The slip dress is comfortable, sexy, feminine and carries that care-free attitude and confidence we all love. Not really sure whether their similarity to lingerie is a plus or not. (They are a great match with number 10.)

7.       Neon everywhere
Oh, the magical sea of colors! Neon was everywhere especially in the street fashion and the kids’ fashion. All these bright pinks and yellows and greens were flooding the market. Almost every trend coming up during the 90s was coming in neon colors, too. They are significant part of the street fashion.

8.       Crop Tops
How much I adore these! Crop tops were the chicest and sexiest trend in women’s clothing. Well represented in movies, video clips and advertisements. Demonstrated proudly by almost every girl on TV, including teen pop sensations and supermodels. I used to admire them so much I sew crop tops for my Вarbi dolls, too. (Looks gorgeous with numbers 11, 2, 13 and 19.)

9.       Platform Sneakers
Another typical street fashion example, sneakers are comfortable and easy to maintain. They will never fade out of style, but the first platform ones were born in the 90s. They rocked sport’s world, they rocked hip-hop fashion. They keep rocking us today and may they live long! (Fits perfect with everything on this list.)

10.   Velvet Dresses/ Jackets
No wonder “Black velvet” ruled the charts in the early 90s. Velvet was the trademark for supermodels, Hollywood, rich people in casinos and night clubs. Velvet comes in various shapes and colors, but most notably dresses and jackets in black and burgundy (or dark blue). A few years ago this trend came back and we won’t let it go easily. (Also the jackets look great with number 6.)

11.   High-waisted Jeans
Remember when low-waisted jeans came in the spotlight in the early 2000s and replaced the comfy high-waisted mom jeans… now that I think about it that wasn’t a good replacement. High-waisted jeans are not only more comfortable, they are better for your health, could be worn during every season and look certainly better. They also hide the belly and makes you look thinner. I’ve been waiting for a long time for these cuties to come back on the scene but they are 100% here to stay. Also the 90s had one other classic – high-waisted charlston jeans. I loved these, too.

12.   Mini Backpacks
A serious comeback within the last few years. Backpacks are easy to carry around, they are cute, fit well with everything. They also come in various colors and materials and are a suitable option for both kids and adults. Great for travelling, too. Backpacks looks perfect comined with basically every piece of clothing on this list (and in your wardrobe in general).

13.   Cargo Pants
Very famous and worn by almost every pop, R’n’B or hip-hop singer in the 90s. A typical street fashion item, cargo pants were excessively famous for  people who loved the next trend. (They also look very cool with number 3.)

14.   Baggy Clothes
The best example of street fashion possible. Comfortable and certainly not pretentious, they are fine to wear every day. Also a classic example of the hip-hop culture that kept rising during the 90s. (Fits well with numbers 3, 9 and 12.)

15.   Plaid Sets
Probably the most famous set from the most famous 90s movie – Cher’s yellow plaid set in Clueless. This is my first association when I think about 90s fashion. Plaid was everywhere – shirts, jackets, skirts, dresses, trousers. And, of course, the runways and fashion magazines presented the plaid sets  containing jacket + skirt and jacket+trousers. I remember wearing plaid on my first day to school.  (Plaid items fits perfectly with numbers 2, 8 and 12.)

16.   Vertical Stripes
Another strong 90s call  -  the vertical stripes. Most notably used on shirts, vertical stripes fit well on sweatshirts, trousers, jackets and even crop tops. One of the most recognizable patterns in the world, it won’t step out of the fashion scene soon. Bonus – these stripes also make you look taller. (Makes a great combo with number 11.)

17.   Bandanas
Oh, these sweethearts! Well presented on the heads of various musicians, these hair accessories are important part of the 90s fashionista’s wardrobe. It certainly looks cute and is also a very comfortable trend. I used to have 10 different colors of bandana.

18.   (Backwards worn) Bike Caps
You might recognize this trend from basically every 90s miovie, TV show or video clip. They were everywhere. A huge signature of the street fashion style, bike caps are comfortable,  look super casual and worn that way was gave us that I’m-so-cool -I-break-the-rules feeling. (Looks even cooler with numbers 8, 13 or 14.)

19.   Sweaters/ Shirts around the waist
Who hasn’t done it? I used to love wearing my shirts like that. It’s super comfy, has that subtle grunge feeling, looks very casual and at the same time confident and rule-breaking. This trend was demonstrated in almost every movie or TV show during the decade, let alone in the fashion magazines. (This trend is perfect to wear with numbers 4 or 11.)

20.   Slap Bracelets
Yes, I know this one is a little bit childish. But it’s still a big 90s signature. I loved mine despite the fact that putting it on for the 10th time every day hurt sometimes. Plastic jewelry were a big part of the 90s, but this one deserves its special place as the trend we all hope will never come back.
