Channeling my inner Bradshaw (15 valuable lessons Carrie taught me about style)

Ah, remember those glorious SATC days when we all lived and breathed Carrie Bradshaw!  To be honest with you, I still do! As a huge fan of the whole franchise I have to admit I’ve always paralleled myself with Carrie - she writes about her life, has a huge interest in fashion, follows her inner voice when it comes to styling and is not afraid of heights (because have you seen her shoes!)  What mesmerized me about this woman is the fact that she is flawed and perfect at the same time, bold and insecure, childish and mature. Her love life, her friendships and her struggle with every day New York life - I’ve seen it all and I’ve enjoyed it over and over again. (And yes, I DO understand why Vogue used to feed her more than food!) Despite the fact that she is a fictional character I think she is the biggest modern fashionista out there and growing up with her I have learned a few things. Here is my list of 15 valuable lessons Carrie Bradshaw taught me about fashion and personal style:

·         Dare to be extravagant and follow your own voice

This is undoubtedly the best Carrie styling lesson! Even if you haven’t watched SATC you are still pretty much aware that extravagant is the one word that defines Carrie’s style. She follows her inner voice when it comes to fashion and she always looks fantastic! So follow her advice and in doing so follow your heart and dare to be unapologetically yourself.

·         There’s no such thing as being overdressed

This is the second most valuable Carrie lesson. There’s nothing wrong with being your own artistic self and you don’t need to apologize for being stylish. This has been another concern of mine for years because I often felt like I was overdressed, especially when I was at school. But then I figured out that this is natural, it’s me embracing my own style. If Carrie can wear a ball gown in MC Donald’s, then you can do it, too!

·         Buy a big wardrobe… or dressing room

Unfortunately I don’t have a whole dressing room yet… but I hope to have mine someday. What Carrie taught me about this is that you should really take care of your clothes. And that includes giving them enough space, separating them, wash (or dry clean) them properly and you can keep wearing them for many years to come and make the most of them. Investing in your wardrobe means investing in your style.

·         Never regret spending money on clothes

As long as you take good care of your clothes there’s nothing wrong with the money you spent for them. I used to battle this constant guilt inside but then I realized this is actually money well spent. After all if you treat them properly, keep them dry and clean, carry them around for 10+ years and then (if they are still in good condition) donated them to someone else, it’s a great deal for everyone involved.

·         Invest in designer clothes and shoes

To go back the previous point - the deal is totally worth it. Over the years I realized designer clothes and shoes are better quality and therefore they last longer. Take Carrie’s example: “I like my money where I can see it — hanging in my closet!” If you calculate a few years later your expenses you’ll realize that you’ve spent less money than you would if you had bought cheaper ones.

·         Good shoes mean self-esteem (and it’s ok to wear heels everywhere)

Yes, that’s truth. Or if I have to quote Carrie herself:  “Someimes it’s hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes, that’s why we need really special ones now and then – to make the walk a little more fun.” Favorite shoes affect your mood, raise your self-esteem and as long as you feel comfortable in them, there’s no need to apologize for wearing them all the time. Personally I have been to concerts where everyone is wearing sneakers, and I stood up 3 hours on these incredibly high heels. Had a blast anyway!

·         Dare to wear bright colors

Bright colors are your friends, embrace them. Yes, they are bold. Yes, dark and neutrals are the safer bet. However, if you want to stand out, I highly recommend you going after the bright ones. Dare to be different, dare to bring light, dare to inspire! Sometimes a single bright color (even jewelry or accessories in such) can be the game changer that will turn your outfit into masterpiece.

·         Be bold when layering

Another trend you shouldn’t be afraid of. Layering can be perfect for certain seasons or for long days out (that slightly turn into nights out). This trend also gives you an incredible opportunity to be creative - combine patterns, materials, colors. Stand out by wearing something no one else had. Carrie has given us a thousand examples.

·         Mix patterns, colors and styles

Once again, dare to be bold! To continue my previous point, mixing as you wish is actually a great way to channel your inner stylist. If you have seen enough runways you probably know that a lot of stuff shown there is shocking at first sight. However being brave pays in the end. So if you feel like you like certain combination, do it! Don’t wait for someone else to invent your idea, show it out and be confident in yourself.

·         You can never be wrong with bold accessories

Or huge details. A single big accessory can be that finishing touch your outfit needed. Be bold and go for it because magic hides everywhere. Broches, necklaces, big bracelets, weird headpieces or just a flower at the stripe of your dress… examples are everywhere! To summarize this lesson – when it comes to jewelry and accessories, go big or go home!

·         Don’t forget about the classics

Little black dress, red for dinner night, a white T-shirt and the perfect pair of jeans, a white dress, two parts business suit, the perfect winter coat, your favorite pair of high heels, a stand out clutch and the perfect sunglasses. When it comes to basics they should always be the stars in your wardrobe! Carrie has them, I have them, every stylish woman has them. They are your best friends, always there to save you in case of fashion emergency. And they never go out of style!

·         Vintage is the new hot trend

Vintage for a night out, work lunch or even for your wedding – sure, why not! Carrie has  done it all. It’s hot, it’s old but gold, it’s also a very eco-friendly trend. And remember - a stand out outfit will always find its way back! So don’t be scared to buy vintage and take good care of your wardrobe (because it might already contain vintage beauty inside).

·         Wear local fashion while vacationing

Carrie always does this and honestly, it’s a great way to mingle with the locals. Also travelling becomes much more magical when you absorb the culture and art of the country and embracing their fashion is a great way to do so. For example, try Carrie’s barets in Paris and turbans in the Middle East.

·         Take from your man’s wardrobe

Another great way of style mixing and one I love very much! And apparently Carrie loves it, too. Little details like a tie, bow tie, vest or a hat can be incredibly sexy and will definitely catch the attention! Fashion designers also like this combination and every few years it comes back to the runway.

·         Dare to use weird at first sight elements

A ballet tutu when running errands in town, a flamenco skirt to dinner date – Carrie sure knows how to use them to her advantage! They can totally finish the outfit and despite the fact that it may look strange at first glance, the creativeness of this combinations make them artistic and feminine, and undoubtedly sexy. Name one woman who doesn’t search for these qualities in her outfit!
