A fashion recap of 2k18
Oh, recaps! How I love them – comparing, rating and making a
big deal out of it :D
We are already ¼ into 2019, so the hottest fashion trends of
2018 deserve classification. From the worst through the questionable to the
best of last year – here is your fashion recap according to my humble opinion.
Let’s get started!
The big “No-No”s
1. Knit sets
As a 90s child I do recognize a comeback. And as a knit
lover I do appreciate warm cozy clothing. But there are two big problems with
these – they simply aren’t season appropriate and they do look TOO MUCH! A long
sleeved knitted crop top – like, you either want to catch a cold during the
winter or want to look absolutely stupid during the spring/ summer period. And
even if they are well tailored, they look too much like pyjamas.
2. Tiny sunglasses
These were
huge! Like celebrities being obsessed with them huge. But you know how certain
models just don`t fit the structure of your face… According to me these don’t
fit anybody’s face! And the protection this shape has is at least 50% less than
other models due to the shape and size, so no!
3. Tracksuits/ Sweatpants:
These come
back around on the runway occasionally… Let me get that straight – I am
perfectly OK with wearing them to the gym. Or when jogging. Or lying on the couch at home. Or
even grocery shopping in them while in the neighbourhood. But wearing a
tracksuit at a cafeteria, at the mall, long walking in the park, or (should I
even say this out loud) in the office or at a social event, this should be
unthinkable! There are plenty of casual everyday clothes to wear and feel
comfortable. Bottom line – tracksuits
stay in the gym!
4. Logo all over
Everyone
obsesses over designer clothes. That’s OK. It’s also perfectly OK to want your
designer logo somewhere on your clothes. But having it over and over again all
over the piece of clothing is just way TOO MUCH. And showing off doesn’t look
tasteful at all. It makes it quite the opposite. Besides it takes away the
attention from the shape, fabric or colour.
5. Clear shoes/ handbags
These are
plain ugly! First, they look creepy. The shoes show unnecessarily too much of
the skin and the material makes them uncomfortable to wear. The handbags show
all your possesions to the outside world
(even the ones that should probably stay hidden) and according to me it looks
very attention craving. Besides they look cheap, childish and plain tasteless!
6. Oversized/ Drop crotch/ Clear jeans
Basically
everything wrong with jeans last year :D I get it – they are widely worn all
over the globe. Everybody loves jeans, everybody wears jeans, even I have 10
pairs of jeans in my wardrobe. They are super comfy, easy to combine with (and
therefore suitable for all occasions) and designers are making constant
innovations with them. And every once in a while somebody comes up with a
brilliant idea how to make cute jeans look terrible! Starting off with the
clear trend, clear jeans are creepy, out of space, look excessively tasteless
and to me they look like some kind of childish creation. Drop crotch pants –
these I hate! Both for men and women, they look terrible and seem obviously
uncomfortable to wear. Then there comes badly patched jeans, ripped jeans,
oversized baggy boyfriend jeans… The last depend highly on the figure of the
woman, but since I’m not so tall I kinda lose myself in boyfriend jeans and
this is the main reason for me to rule them out. Besides they are too much
street fashion for my taste.
And the
queen of bad looking clothing– a 2017 trend that sadly some people kept wearing
through 2018 –net tights with ripped jeans. What can I say, to me these are
cheap and very classless.
7. Fanny packs
Another 90s
comeback that I disapprove of. I hated them as a child, I hate them now too. I
totally understand the comfort of wearing all the necesities close to you, but
really, in such an ugly way! Fanny packs are too sporty for my style and to me
they make everything they`re combined
with look less stylish.
8. Crocks
The very idea that these are suitable for
anywhere besides the bathroom is simply
scandalous! I can’t even imagine how anybody would want to wear them on the
streets but since they were on the runway I have to count them as a trend of
2018. A very bad trend indeed.

The
questionable ones:
1. Layering
Now this is
a very interesting style in general. Clothes layering may be really cool and
very suitable for cerain seasons. However there were some awful layering
combinations shown on the runway so… Let me put that straight, if you layer
like Joey-in-that-episode-of-Friends than you certainly don’t do it right :D
2. (Puka) shell necklaces
These
remind me of sea, waves, sun and carefree attitude. So they are perfect for the
summer. However you should be very careful what you combine them with. Summer
style is not suitable for every day and this type of necklaces are certainly
not for special occasions or for a night
out.
3. Bermuda shorts
These are
also perfect for the summer… and summer only! Don’t wear them in the office,
don’t wear them to a restaurant, don’t wear them to special ocasions. And for
Christ`s sake, don’t wear the with blazer and a tie!
4. Oversized jewelry
These look
cool with some clothes and don’t fit well with others. So you have to be really
careful with them. Sometimes they may come as too much and if you wear an
oversized necklace, for example, you probably shouldn’t add additional jewelry
or wear blouse with details. Personally I love oversized accessories for my
casual outfits and sometimes for business casual dressing. But my advise for
special occasions is to stick to the minimal
when it comes to jewelry.
5. The Wild West style
This one is
tricky because it just doesn’t fit everyone. Besides some people tend to overdo
it and look like they`re wearing a
Halloween costume. But I love the fringes, suede, scarfs, belts and hats. My
advise is to add some Wild West detail instead of going from head to toe in it.
6. Sequins
These
dresses are fabulous for party. But in all honesty – stick to the party idea
with them. They are not for daylight, not for every day and definitely
shouldn’t be combined with other accent. My advise – perfect for birthdays and
New Year parties only!
7. Plaid sets
Another 90s
comeback, these have certain level of cuteness but can be overdone seriously.
There is a thin line when wearing plaid sets and you have to be careful. Sure,
they remind you of Cher in “Clueless” (I loved that movie), but you risk
looking like a trapped timetraveler. The pattern itself is very specific. Plaid
doesn’t fit everyone and shouldn`t be combined with another pattern. The safer
choice if you want to wear plaid is to use the pieces separately.

My absolute
YES trends:
1. UGG-s
These
I totally approve of (but let`s be clear
– for winter only). They are warm, cozy
and combbined with the right overcoat can look super cute. The rubber
sole will never let you down (or
let you fall) and the wool inside makes
them your best friends in the cold season. Who says comfort can`t be trendy?
2. Trench coats
My
favourite asset for every spring and most of the autumn.Trench coats are
feminine, comfortable, super stylish and give you that effortless business
casual look you know you love. They come in various colours which is a huge
plus – you decide whether you want to go hide-and-seek in the crowd all nude or
make a statement and stand out in a bright colour. Trenches are a must have and
have been constant guests at the fashion
scene for the last few years. I say let them stay!
3. Off-shoulder blouses/ Open shoulder
sleeves
These were
huge. I rememer being totally in love with them from my early childhood. They
go a little bit teen fashion, a little bit grundge, a little bit bar/ disco
dresscode. My opinion is that they are sexy, cool, give you that fresh look and
yet stay very feminine at the same time. I call this hidden
sexappeal!
4. Corset belts
This is a
tricky one because it certainly isn`t for everyday use. But there is
something about it… It gives you that gothic rock style, that
medieval-times-meet-21stcentury-nightlife super hot look. It`s sexy, goth glam and puts great accent on the
waist. For me it`s always been the ultimate vamp chic!
5. Mini bags
These are
simply too cute. They are elegant, feminine, timeless and can be your best
accesssory. Considering a lot of models are also handmade, they are a valuable
asset to every woman’s wardrobe. Easy to carry around, fits ever style, they`re
perfect for a girls night out. The only dissadvantage I have found through my
long years of their usage is the simple fact that you can`t put too much stuff
in them (and usually that’s a problem).
6. Chokers
Again a
very tricky trend. Chockers were THE trend for the past two years. My favourite 90s comeback of them all. Chockers
represented everything cool in the teen fashion I used to admire growing up.
Ladies on MTV wore them so that definitely was THE jewelry for me. Growing up I
started wearing them too and realised they look super sexy and are not as
uncomfortable as they look :D They`re
hot enough to get all eyes on you. My personal favourite are the lace
ones -
they remind me of the Victorian times. Since chokers come in so many
different models you can basically wear a different one every day but be
careful with them and don`t overdo it.
